Why is it still the leading cause of blindness?

Cataracts are responsible for around half of all blindness in the world, but they’re entirely treatable, and surgery is one of the safest, fastest and routine surgeries out there.

But what is a cataract?

A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s lens. As it clouds, a person’s vision gets blurred or dims. Cataracts generally affect people as they get older, though it can have other causes, such as genetics or diabetes.

Across the globe, around 100 million people live with cataracts, including 94 million whose vision has been affected. A staggering 17 million people have lost their sight to cataracts and are legally blind.

But here’s the thing…

cataracts

Cataracts are completely reversible with a simple 15-20 minute surgery. But for vulnerable families living on what they earn each day, the cost of the operation is simply impossible to afford, and the person with cataracts loses their sight.

Once their eyesight is gone, they become dependent on family, unable to navigate life with blindness without help and adjustment, especially in communities not adapted to impaired vision.

Once a cataract surgery has been performed, the cataract doesn’t return, and the patient can return to their life as they did before, with independence and able to care for others.

Cataract waqf

We’re committed to changing the world for the better. Our Light of the Sight Waqf provides one person with cataract surgery one year after your donation. Every single year – forever – you’ll restore sight.

We never spend your donation; we invest it, pooling your donation with others to buy a halal asset – such as property to rent. Each year, we withdraw the profit and use it to perform cataract surgeries.

And since we reinvest 10% of your profit, your waqf keeps growing. We estimate that after 17 years, you’ll be able to provide two surgeries every year as your investment continues to generate profit.
